AI is short for artificial intelligence, a term coined by John McCarthy in 1955 at Dartmouth College. It’s related to the work of Alan Turing, who in 1950 developed the Turing test, which evaluates a machine’s ability to exhibit behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, a human. The scientific study of AI aims to develop computer hardware and software which emulates processes of the human brain, including the processing of photographic images and human languages.

AI may also refer to the file type. The .AI file extension is short for Adobe Illustrator file, and is a proprietary format to save vector graphic files in Adobe Illustrator.
